The Canon EOS 1100Da, modified for astrophotography, features a significantly increased H-Alpha sensitivity compared to the original model. This allows it to capture approximately four times more H-Alpha light than a standard DSLR camera.
As a result, the camera captures significantly more H-Alpha light and is perfectly suited for photographing diffuse nebula structures, red hydrogen nebulae, and faint emission regions of the night sky.
Compared to an unmodified camera, significantly shorter exposure times are possible. In a single clear night, many more individual images can be captured, which can later be used for the stacking process. At the same time, more light reaches the sensor during the same exposure time, revealing fine nebula details and faint deep-sky structures that often remain hidden with a standard camera.
The modification makes this camera ideal for deep-sky imaging, Milky Way photography, and long-exposure astronomy. It is an ideal camera for ambitious astrophotographers who want to create detailed and low-noise images of the night sky.

Canon EOS 1100Da – Special Features
The Canon EOS 1100Da impresses with its particularly compact and lightweight design, making it ideal for mobile astrophotography and smaller telescope setups. Weighing just 495 g, it puts less strain on mounts than larger DSLR models. The proven 12.2-megapixel CMOS sensor delivers clean astro images with pleasantly moderate file sizes, simplifying image processing even on older computers. At the same time, the EOS 1100Da is one of the most affordable entry-level cameras for deep-sky astrophotography.

The "good old" Canon 1100D is still well-suited for astrophotography, especially for long exposures. Its pixel size of 5.16 µm is usually completely sufficient for capturing diffuse, faintly glowing objects. Although modern DSLR cameras (even from Canon) offer smaller pixels at a significantly higher price, this does not increase image resolution. Resolution is instead determined by the optics (focal length of the telescope used) and, above all, by the so-called "seeing"—the limitation of image sharpness due to air turbulence in the Earth's atmosphere, which can be up to 2–3 arcseconds. A telescope with a 20 cm aperture theoretically provides an image resolution of about 0.6 arcseconds, which, however, is practically never achieved due to seeing (except perhaps at very high altitudes like in the Atacama Desert). Smaller pixels therefore offer no advantage here but significantly increase the camera price. Thus, the resolution of the EOS 1100Da at a 1 m focal length of the telescope corresponds to about 3 arcseconds—matching the value of poor seeing. Particularly advantageous is the combination with the automated tracking and exposure system Lacerta MGEN. This ensures that the telescope tracks precisely despite unavoidable fluctuations and simultaneously controls one or more DSLR cameras (exposure time, exposure sequence, etc.). In my experience, this works particularly reliably with Canon EOS cameras. I myself usually control two Canon EOS 1100Da cameras simultaneously, which are mounted on my telescopes. With this system, image sequences of up to 400 individual exposures of 3 minutes each are created, which, after stacking, correspond to a total exposure time of 20 hours. Naturally, it goes faster with more modern, sensitive DSLR cameras—but at significantly higher purchase costs and at the expense of significantly more storage space due to the smaller pixels, without achieving any real gain in resolution.

Notes on Astrophotography and Modification
In astro-modified cameras, autofocus and infinity focus continue to work as in a standard model. The sensor remains protected, and the internal sensor cleaning system remains fully functional.
The camera can still be used for daylight shots. The package includes an OWB (Original White Balance) clip filter for Canon EF lenses, which allows for natural color reproduction similar to an unmodified Canon camera.
Canon EF-S lenses are not compatible with this filter, as they protrude too far into the camera body due to their design. However, many Canon EF lenses and numerous third-party lenses such as Sigma, Tamron, or Samyang can still be used.
