Professional H-Alpha Modification for Canon EOS Cameras
Precision Modification for Astrophotography & Deep-Sky Imaging
This is a service — not a camera sale
You are not purchasing a camera, but rather the modification of your own Canon EOS camera into an H-Alpha astro camera.
The scope of services includes — depending on the article — for example:
- H-Alpha astro modification
- Full-spectrum conversion
- Sensor cleaning
- Repairs & adjustments
- Firmware updates
- Technical calibrations
The exact scope is specified in the respective product description.
Professional Conversion of Your Canon EOS to an H-Alpha Astro Camera
We professionally modify your Canon APS-C or full-frame DSLR for astrophotography. Since 2012, we have converted well over 1,000 Canon and Sony cameras into astro and full-spectrum cameras.
By removing the factory-installed blocking filter, the camera becomes significantly more sensitive to the important H-alpha spectrum at 656.28 nm — ideal for capturing emission nebulae, hydrogen regions, and deep-sky objects.
Our modified cameras achieve:
- over 4× higher sensitivity in the H-alpha range
- over 6× higher sensitivity for sulfur-II lines (SII)
Compared to a standard camera, this enables:
- shorter exposure times
- more individual images for stacking
- better signal quality
- more visible nebula structures
Technical Background
Standard cameras block a large part of the red H-alpha light through the factory-installed IR blocking filter. During our modification, this filter is removed under cleanroom conditions. This extends the camera's spectral sensitivity to approximately 700 nm, allowing significantly more H-alpha light to reach the sensor.
The result:
- higher light yield
- more efficient deep-sky imaging
- better nebula representation
- reduced exposure times
After the modification, precise sensor calibration is performed, including:
- laser-assisted sensor adjustment
- focus calibration
- hot pixel mapping
- functional tests under real-world conditions
Your camera remains technically fully functional — but now with massively increased sensitivity for astrophotography.
Precision Conversion with Professional Post-Processing
The camera is disassembled under magnifying optics with ESD-protected tools to reliably avoid dust, scratches, or electrostatic damage.
Cleanroom Filter Removal
The original H-alpha blocking filter is removed under controlled conditions.
Laser-Assisted Focus Calibration
Removing the filter changes the sensor plane, and we precisely recalibrate the sensor with professional measuring technology according to Canon specifications to ensure:
- autofocus remains intact
- infinity focus functions correctly
- sharpness extends to the image corners
Practical Tests
Each camera is intensively tested and optimized after modification.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can I still use the camera during the day?
✅ Yes. Either via manual white balance or with a UV/IR-cut filter. We include a free clip filter for EF lenses (not EF-S).
Does the autofocus still work?
✅ Yes. Autofocus and infinity focus remain intact.
Does the sensor cleaning function remain operational?
✅ Yes. The automatic sensor cleaning remains functional.
Note on Our Modification of the Canon EOS RP
Some providers advertise that replacing the original Canon UV/IR blocking filter (2) with a replacement glass offers an advantage — compared to modifications where the filter is simply removed. But what does physics say? The astro modification: removing the blocking filter to increase H-alpha sensitivity (656.3 nm) is the primary and, in our view, the only purpose of any astro modification. Installing an additional replacement glass in the beam path does not provide any advantages for light yield, as every optical element reflects, scatters, or absorbs light. Glass cannot create photons — it only reduces the amount of light that reaches the sensor. Additionally, replacement glasses can cause reflections, ghost images, or other image artifacts at high contrasts, especially if inferior materials are used. Empirical practice shows that classic DSLR astro modifications have been successfully carried out for years without replacement glass — proof that the H-alpha increase is achieved solely by removing the filter.
For the Canon RP, we have chosen a mechanical-technical approach with precise CNC machining. Although the workload is higher, the original blocking filter can be removed without having to install an additional replacement glass. This preserves the following functions:
Back-focus distance
Autofocus
Infinity focus
Wide-angle compatibility
The advantages:
✔ No light loss due to additional optical elements
✔ No image artifacts due to reflections or scattering
✔ Simpler design — fewer components, fewer sources of error
Conclusion:
✅ A replacement glass is optically unnecessary and reduces light yield. Our mechanical solution for the Canon RP proves that focus and wide-angle compatibility can also be maintained without additional glass — for a technically clean and efficient astro modification.
